ABSTRACT

We need energy for our existence in this world. Among various energy forms, we depend on electricity very much. We are using a lot of electrical appliances for our domestic and community life. But the fact is that energy once used results in its loss. Wastage of electricity will severely affect the next generation.

For the effective study of the topic, a detailed survey was conducted with the help of a questionnaire and the data was collected and consolidated. Difference between the actual meter reading and the calculated actual consumption is found out using the survey details for each consumer. A detailed observation schedule was prepared and the analysis of the data collection was done. Related files were downloaded from the internet. An interview with an expert in this field was also conducted.

From this study,I could understand that my doubts regarding the use and wastage of electricity were true to a great extent. I could note down the different ways we waste electricity while using it. Old wiring materials causes a good amount of Power Loss. Sometimes we use unnecessarily high – watt electrical appliances. This also causes energy wastage.About 66% of families are wasting a high amount of electricity.

A seminar was conducted on 15-12-2009 at the school with the help of a slide presentation to inform those who participated in the survey. Posters are prepared and exhibited for the attention of the public. The survey results are published in a blog- {http/wastageofelectricityremedialmeasures.blogspot.com}.

Use of C.F.L. and L.E.D. bulbs will be promoted. The habit of using all electrical lamps and other high watt appliances at the peak time must be discouraged. The project highly lights upon the urgency of conserving electrical energy.

WASTAGE OF ELECTRICITY AND REMEDIAL MEASURES

INTRODUCTION:-
Many places in Kerala is facing an acute problem of voltage drop. It is being remoured about that due to shortage of water at reservoirs. The most important water source of Kerala is the rain water. We get rainfall for six months in a year. Still water scarcity is severe even though there is rain. But now a days we did not get rainfall and so water scarcity is more severe. If there is no water, there is no electricity. That is the severe condition of our state of Kerala.
So the government is considering the implementation of power cut. Hence it has become a dire necessity to make people aware of the need to conserve electricity and to find out the ways to do so. And this is the relevance of my project.

TOPIC:-

WASTAGE OF ELECTRICITY-
REMEDIAL MEASURES..

AIMS:-

1.Get an idea about the consumption of Electricity in our houses /organizations.
2.Find out whether they misuse Electricity.
3.Find out and suggest measures to reduce power consumption.
4.To make the public aware about the conservation of electricity.
5.Find out the reasons for the shortage of electricity.

METHOD OF STUDY:

i)Basis of Sample selection:-

A random method of selection that includes thirty houses around our area, including houses from various panchayats and municipality without considering economic backgrounds, is used in this study.

(ii) TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES USED FOR DATA COLLECTION.

a) Questionnaire.

A model questionnaire is used for the data collection and for analysis. Thirty copies of this questionnaire was distributed among the houses and made the data to be entered in it properly.

b) Observation Schedule
Data collected through the survey is entered into the observation schedule. To know whether it is right or not. And I directly observed the method of electricity conservation. Also I tried locate the cases of energy loss in my locality. Movie clippings of these cases are taken and attached to this study along with the observation schedule in the appendix part.

c)Interview
A Interview with Sri. Sivaprsad K. an expert electrical engineer who is working in
Nirmithi constructions, was conducted on 29/11/09 and I got a hold of informations from him.

d)Seminar
A seminar was conducted in the class with the presence of the Headmaster, Guide, teachers and students. With their comments the project was modified.

(iii) METHOD OF DATA CONSOLIDATION

Each family was visited by me. The information obtained from them was entered into the questionnaire, sometimes the family members themselves entered the data in the questionnaire. We ourselves filled up the observation schedule after observing the houses and its ammeter reading.

DATA CONSOLIDATION AND ANALYSIS:

According to the information obtained from the questionnaires that distributed among the thirty houses, most of the families are not aware of various means of wastage of electricity. Most of houses are wired below twenty years. Electricity is used for cooking foods in two or three houses. Inverters are also using in some houses. Most of the families are using fans during bed times. There are no solar equipments in these houses. Many of the families are using fans during day time. In most of the houses refrigerators are working for twenty four hours. Because of the excess use of water the water pump is operating for a long time. Most families use mechanical regulators for their sealing fans. Some families are taking electricity without using the pins from the plug point. This will cause a severe wastage of electricity. Many of the houses are using the electrical appliances like Mixy, T.V, Iron box, Refrigerator etc. in Peak times. This will cause a severe wastage of electricity.

By consolidating the informations got from questionnaires, I came to a conclusion that all the families are wasting a large quantity of electricity in their daily functioning.

Total Conservation of Electricity per Month

A Short Camparison

Electricity Loss

REMEDIAL RECOMMANDATIONS

1) By using CFL lamps we can reduce the wastage of electricity to a good extent.
2)Use of electricity in peak-time should be restricted.
3)Assume the policy of “ Sleep early and Rise early”.
4)If we switch off the refrigerator during night time,we can save electricity.
5) Avoid the daily use of iron box,we can save electricity to a great extent.
6) Avoid operating electric motor daily.
7)Taking of electricity from a plug point without using a pin should be avoided.

CONCLUSION

Findings:-
Most of the high watt Electrical appliances are operating in the peak-time.
The policy of sleep early and rise early will help to reduce the loss of energy and your electricity bill.
Many are using iron box daily.
Because of the excess use of water electrical motor is operating for a longtime.
Many of the family are using mechanical regulators for their fans, this will cause lose of electricity in the form of heat energy.
All of the families are operating refrigerator full time daily.
Most of the families are using fans in their bed rooms during night time.
Electricity is taking from the plug point without using a pin causes some power loss.
A large amount of electricity is losing in each families

INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET

Wastage of electricity state measures to reduce wastage of electricity for house hold ?
Switch on lights and fans only when you need. Switch them off in the rooms where no one is there. Replace incandescent lamps with CFL.
Tube lights should be fitted with electronic chokes instead of the wired type. Do not use AC (air conditioner) during the day. Even in the nights the use of AC should be restricted to very warm nights and adjust the temperature not below 24 degrees. The AC can be switched off when the room gets sufficiently cool. Similarly the use of room heaters should be restricted to a few hours till the room gets tolerably warm. Minimum necessary capacity of water pump is to be selected and the number of switchings should as minimum as possible. Low capacity geysers should selected and they should be switched on only for the duration of usage.
Solar water heaters available in the market , it it is possible to be installed and used will save considerable electricity. Tube lights should be fitted with electronic chokes instead of the wired type. . Even in the nights the use of AC should be restricted to very warm nights.

65 WAYS TO SAVE ELECTRICITY
KEEP YOUR ELECTRICITY BILLS DOWN AND SAVE ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE BY BEING AWARE OF THE MOST EFFICIENT WAYS TO USE ELECTRICITY.
COOKING

1 Keep the door closed. Ever time you open it the temperature drop about 20 degrees (c)
2 Cook several dishes at the one time.If you are cooking small items use the frypan.
3 When cooking small quantities use one sauce pan with dividers.
4 Keep food warm at 70-80 deg(c) Higher temperatures waste electricity and over cook food.
5 Use oven heat for plate warming.
6 Use utensils with flat bottoms and well fitting lids.Make sure they cover hotplates.
7 To cook vegetables the water doesn't need to be boiling furiously - a gentle simmer is enough.

8 Fan type ovens reduce cooking costs.
9 Use bright clean hotplate reflectors to send the heat upwards where it is wanted.
10 Pressure cookers can save up to 25% of power.
11 Use small appliances eg. griller, crockpot, wok, etc for appropriate foods.
12 Thaw frozen foods before cooking - this saves about 15 minutes cooking per 450 grams (one pound).
13 A microwave is very economical for suitable functions -it is excellent for reconstituting food.
14 Don't use grill-boiler plate on top of range for utensils not large enough to cover it.
15 Don't boil water on a hotplate - use an electric kettle.
16 Make sure your oven door seals properly.
HEATING AND COOLING.

17 Have the ceiling insulated with at least 50mm of fibrous or foam insulation.
18 In timber framed or brick homes the walls should also be insulated. Block off any chimneys not being used - A lot of heat is lost there.
19 Unless you have full home conditioning close the doors of the room/s being heated or cooled. Doors and windows should fit well because draughts can waste a lot of energy. Close curtains to stop heat escaping.
20 See that air- conditioner filters and condenser coils are kept clean.
21 Reverse cycle air-conditioners provide 2 to 2.5 times as much heat as an element type heater for the same electricity consumption.

22 Zoning of a house conditioned by a ducted system can cut energy consumption to a half or even third.
23 Shade windows during summer to keep sun of the glass.
24 Don't leave heating or cooling appliances on when rooms are unoccupied.
25 Use personal fans and ceiling fans for relief from hot weather. Fans cost much less to run than air conditioners.
26 Many air- conditioning systems operate at 22 deg (c). You will still be comfortable if you set the control for 24-25 deg (c) in summer. and 18-19 deg (c) in winter and you will use a lot less electricity.

27 Leave room conditioner "fresh air " and "exhaust air " controls in the closed positions unless you want to freshen thew room air.
28 Set fan at high speed for a room conditioner to work most efficiently.
29 Evaporative coolers are very effective when installed correctly. The operating cost of an evaporative cooler is only a fraction of that of a refrigerated unit.
30 A student can be kept warm with a 150 watt infra red lamp fitted under the desk.
31 Localised under carpet heating gives economical armchair comfort.
32 People heating is more economical than space heating.-use radiators multi-heat radiant heaters, wall strip heaters ,fan heaters.
33 Electric blankets are the cheapest form of bedroom heating.
REFRIGERATION
34 Select a fridge that uses waste heat for defrosting etc. These fridges are usually cheaper to operate.
35 Buy the size you need extra capacity uses extra power.
36 If you already have a chest or upright freezer buy an "all though " refrigerator instead of a fridge freezer combination.

37 Defrost before the ice build up is 1 cm thick.
38 Open the door only when necessary.
39 Make sure the door seals well. If a piece of paper will slide easily between the cabinet and the door seal is not good enough.

40 Keep dust and fluff brushed off the coils on the back or bottom of the fridge.
41 Put the fridge in a well ventilated position.
42 Place your fridge away from direct sunlight or any source of heat. Don't put hot food into a fridge or freezer.
CLOTHES AND WASHING
43 Don't buy a large machine if you don't need it. For the occasional big wash an extra cycle or two is cheaper than under using a large washer.
44 Adjust the water level to economically wash a partial load.Otherwise it is better to wait until you have a full load. But don't overload your machine.

45 Your washer may have features than can save your money.Soak cycles remove stubborn stains in wash cycle.Suds savers allow you to re use hot water.
46 Use correct type of detergent and cold or tepid water will wash clothes effectively.
LIGHTING
47 Good lighting means avoiding glare and gloom by using the right amount of light in the right way.

48 Use light translucent shades- opaque or dark shades require bigger lamps.
49 Use a good local light near the task. It is more effective and more efficient than a large central light.
50 Use fluorescent tubes . they use about a quarter of electricity used by ordinary globes and they last
about eight times as long. They CAN be switched on and off as often as you need without affecting operating cost.
CLOTHES DRYING
51 Use solar energy to dry your clothes -it costs nothing.
52 Operate your dryer using the fan alone. Only switch the heater on if it is really necessary.Vent the dryer outside the house and don't let lint block the vent.

53 never overload or underload the dryer - you get most economical operation with the correct load.
54 Switch off when the clothes are dry enough - over drying makes them feel harsh and waste electricity.
55 Tumble dryers are more effective than cabinet dryers.
WATER HEATING
56 Off peak low pressure storage heaters are generally the cheapest overall.

57 Don't allow dripping taps .Sixty drips a minutes means about 1200 litres a month drown the drain.
And you have paid for it to be heated.
58 Water restrictors and low flow shower nozzles will help to save water.
59 Insulate hot water pipes from storage heaters for at least a metre from the heater as heat can be conducted along these pipes and lost to the atmosphere.

60 Install a storage heater of 125 litres or more to run off peak tariff - which is about half the normal rate.
61 Normally you will use less water for shower than bath.
62 Fill your electric kettle or jug from the cold tap.Running off a lot of cold water from the hot pipes is wasteful and expensive.
63 Don't have you hot water set too 70 deg (c) is usually hot enough . Otherwise it costs more to heat the water and it loses more heat while being stored.
ACCESSORIES
64 Dimmers save power and enable you to obtain pleasant changes of mood in your lighting.
65 Use plug-in timers to control such things as fryingpans, crockpots, riadiators.lights and air conditioners.
